KACRAN Raises Alarm Over Livestock Exodus, Urges Northern Governors to Act

The Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has raised concerns over the increasing movement of livestock from Nigeria to neighbouring African countries, warning that the trend could threaten food security, national security and economic growth.

The association said livestock traders were increasingly transporting cattle, sheep and rams from major markets in Yobe, Borno and Gombe states to countries including Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Togo.

In a statement signed by its National President, Hon. Khalil Mohd Bello, on September 29, 2026, KACRAN identified insecurity, cattle rustling, inadequate grazing reserves, water shortages and neglect of livestock development as major factors affecting the sector.
The association disclosed that about five trailers of sheep and rams reportedly leave the Potiskum livestock market in Yobe State daily for foreign destinations, warning that continued outflow could reduce domestic supplies and make livestock products increasingly unaffordable.

KACRAN expressed concern that rising livestock prices could make it difficult for many Nigerians to purchase rams for Eid-el-Kabir and other ceremonies, while also undermining local livestock production and employment.
To address the situation, the association called on Northern governors and other stakeholders to restrict the export of female animals and young breeding stock, strengthen security against cattle rustling, rehabilitate grazing reserves and provide water points and animal feed.

It also urged governments to provide soft loans to livestock traders and farmers, encourage exporters to redirect their businesses towards southern Nigerian markets, and invest in improved livestock breeds to boost local production.
KACRAN stressed that urgent and coordinated action was necessary to protect Nigeria’s livestock resources, strengthen the domestic market, create jobs, reduce dependence on imported animal products and contribute to national economic growth.
