Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has called on Chief Imams of Jumu’ah mosques across the state to intensify prayers for lasting peace, security, and peaceful coexistence as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

The governor also urged the religious leaders to use their Friday sermons to promote unity, love, tolerance, and peaceful political participation, stressing the need to safeguard the peace and stability of the state before, during, and after the elections.

Buni made the appeal during a meeting with Chief Imams from across Yobe State, where he emphasised the critical role of religious leaders in fostering harmony, discouraging divisive rhetoric, and strengthening mutual understanding among citizens.

During the meeting, Governor Buni recalled Yobe State’s painful experiences with insecurity and violence, warning against actions that could threaten the peace achieved over the years.

He stressed that the state could not afford a return to the difficult period of insecurity, urging religious leaders and other stakeholders to work collectively to preserve peace and promote peaceful relationships among communities.

The governor called on the Imams to make sustained prayers for peace and security a priority, seeking divine intervention for Yobe State and Nigeria as a whole.

He further urged them to encourage their congregations to embrace tolerance, respect differing opinions, reject violence, and participate peacefully in the democratic process, irrespective of political differences.

Buni noted that the influence of religious leaders within their communities places them in a strategic position to promote responsible conduct, strengthen unity, and discourage actions capable of creating tension during the electioneering period.

In his response, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Affairs and convener of the meeting, Ustaz Babagana Malam Kyari, commended the governor for engaging religious leaders on the need to sustain peace ahead of the 2027 elections.

Kyari said the meeting would encourage Chief Imams to intensify prayers and use their Friday sermons to promote peaceful coexistence, national unity, and responsible civic participation.

He assured the governor of the commitment of the religious leaders to supporting initiatives aimed at maintaining peace, strengthening unity, and ensuring peaceful conduct throughout the election period.
