The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YOSIEC) has commenced the screening of candidates vying for Chairmanship, Vice Chairmanship, and Councilor positions ahead of the upcoming local government elections in the state.
Dr. Ibrahim Yabani, Executive Chairman of the commission, disclosed this during a press briefing at the SIEC conference hall in Damaturu on Tuesday, outlining the schedule of activities leading to the polls.
He noted that according to the commission's guidelines, the screening exercise will run from September 1st to September 7th, 2026, while Councilor aspirants are being screened across the state's three designated zones: Zone A in Damaturu, Zone B in Potiskum, and Zone C in Bade and Nguru Local Government Areas.
Dr. Yabani further explained that the screening of Chairmanship and Vice Chairmanship candidates is taking place at the SIEC headquarters in Damaturu.
He emphasized that the screening process is strictly based on constitutional provisions.
"The Screening guidelines are very clear; it is adopted from the constitution. The 1999 Constitution as amended clearly gives us the qualifications of who is going to stand and qualify to stand for the election for Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Councilors in any of the Local Government Areas in Nigeria.
"Our screening is based on law, and the parameters are approved by the constitution," he stated.
The SIEC Chairman also announced that political parties will commence their campaigns from September 18th to September 25th, 2026.
He noted that in preparation for the local government election, the commission has trained electoral officers across all 17 local government areas and equipped them to handle the electoral process.
He stated that election materials are scheduled to be deployed on September 24th, with September 26th, 2026, set as the official election day.
