The Joint Academic and Non-Academic Staff Unions of State-Owned Tertiary Institutions (Polytechnics and Colleges) in Yobe State have raised serious concerns over the persistent failure of the Yobe State Government to implement key welfare packages, despite numerous engagements and assurances.
In a joint press statement issued in Damaturu and signed by JASU President Comrade Mohamed Bukar and NASU Chairman Comrade Ali Usman, the unions lamented that the government's assurances have not translated into satisfactory and verifiable implementation.
According to the unions, three critical matters the implementation of the Reviewed 2024 Salary Table for CONPCASS and CONTEDISS, the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), and the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) remain unresolved.
The unions noted that despite several correspondences, reminders, and representations to relevant authorities, the implementation of these packages has been stalled, leaving staff demoralized and frustrated.
"A previous fifteen-working-day ultimatum, which commenced on August 18 and expired on September 7, 2026, passed without satisfactory resolution," the statement read.
"While we acknowledge the engagements and assurances received, the continued delay has heightened the concerns of our members and requires urgent government intervention."
Consequently, the Executive Councils of the two unions have resolved to issue a fresh ultimatum, commencing September 8 and expiring on September 22, 2026. During this period, the unions have called on the government to take concrete and verifiable steps toward resolving the implementation logjam.
The unions emphasized that their action is not intended to create unnecessary tension or confrontation but is a firm call for the government to address legitimate staff welfare issues through dialogue and responsible engagement.
They noted that they have exercised considerable restraint and remained committed to peaceful resolution, but also have a responsibility to protect the welfare of their members.
"We respectfully appeal to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Yobe State, Hon Mai Mala Buni, to personally intervene and direct the relevant authorities to expedite action on these outstanding matters," the unions added.
The statement warned that should the government fail to satisfactorily address these issues within the new ultimatum, the unions shall be compelled to consider and take further lawful and appropriate action in accordance with the decisions of their competent organs.
The unions appealed to all stakeholders and the general public to appreciate that the welfare and motivation of workers are essential to effective teaching, learning, research, and the sustainable development of tertiary education in Yobe State.
"We sincerely hope that the government will respond positively and decisively and bring these longstanding matters to a satisfactory conclusion within the stipulated period," the statement concluded.
The unions have urged their members to remain calm, united, disciplined, and vigilant while awaiting further directives from the appropriate union organs.
