Borno Information Ministry Equips 70 Information Officers with Conflict-Sensitive Reporting Skills

The Borno State Ministry of Information and Internal Security has successfully concluded a two-day capacity-building workshop on Community-Based Conflict-Sensitive Reporting for Information Officers, held from 11th to 12th August 2026 at the Women Development Centre, Maiduguri.

The workshop brought together 70 Information Officers from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) across Borno State, with the objective of strengthening their capacity in peace communication, crisis communication, misinformation and disinformation management, conflict-sensitive reporting, media ethics and relevant legal frameworks.

The training led by Associate Professor Abdulmutallib A. Abubakar of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri featured presentations, interactive sessions, quizzes and group exercises, with participants gaining practical knowledge in responsible reporting and digital information verification. They were introduced to tools and techniques including reverse image searches, Google Lens, TinEye, InVID, metadata and geolocation analysis.

The Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Alhaji Tar, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Aminu Barde Chamalwa, had earlier charged Information Officers to approach their work with accuracy, fairness, empathy, contextual awareness and professionalism, stressing their important role in shaping narratives and promoting peace and social cohesion.

The presentation of certificates to participants took centre stage on the second day, marking the completion of the capacity-building programme and recognising the participants’ commitment to the training.

The workshop was formally declared closed by Dr. Abba Alkali Goni, Special Assistant to the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, who delivered the closing remarks on behalf of the Honourable Commissioner. 

He expressed appreciation to the Borno State Government for supporting the programme, commended the facilitators for their contributions, and acknowledged the commitment of the participating Information Officers throughout the two-day engagement.

The Ministry appreciates the Borno State Government, resource persons, facilitators and all participating Information Officers for their support, contributions and active participation in making the workshop a success

The Ministry further reaffirms its commitment to continuous professional development of Information Officers and to promoting accurate, ethical and conflict-sensitive information dissemination in support of peace, recovery, social cohesion and sustainable development across Borno State.
