A media summit, organised by the Yobe State Government for participants from both the mainstream and social media, will take place in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, on Saturday, 5th September 2026.

The Summit is coordinated by the office of the Secretary to the State Government and facilitated by the Hon. Commissioner of Home Affairs, Information and Culture.

Under the theme "Harnessing Digital Tools for Community Impact and Engagement," the summit will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas amongst media practitioners and a platform for discussing how digital tools could be better deployed to support socio-economic development and strengthen resilience at the community level.

A statement signed by the Yobe Commissioner of Home Affairs, Information, and Culture, Abdullahi Bego, said the one-day summit is "designed to help participants use digital tools more effectively to tell accurate, compelling stories about socio-economic development and resilience at the community level."

The commissioner said 400 people, including mainstream media journalists and editors as well as social media actors, will participate in the one-day summit. "The social media actors were drawn from the 17 local government areas of the state. For the mainstream media, all the major media organisations based in the state, as well as NUJ, NAWOJ, RATTAWU, NIPR, and the Correspondents’ Chapel, will be fully represented," he said.

Bego maintained that subsequent editions of the media summit will open the space for more people to participate. "There is naturally a limit to what we can effectively and responsibly organise and conduct at any given time. So, those who couldn’t make it as participants this time around can expect to be included in a subsequent summit to be organised. More people will participate going forward," he said.

The commissioner also revealed that, to make participation among social media writers more widespread across the 17 local government areas, special assistants to the governor on social media, including those with designations as SSA Media, STA Media, and SSA Photography, will not participate in the media summit.

Bego said those appointees have been slated for a separate workshop coming up on 1st September 2026.
