Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has officially declared the 2026 Yobe Spelling Bee 3.0 Competition open, reaffirming his administration's unwavering commitment to promoting academic excellence and nurturing young talents across the state.
The event, themed "Building Champions Through Knowledge, Inspiring Excellence for a Brighter Yobe State," has brought together pupils and students from across Yobe State to showcase their spelling abilities, confidence, and intellectual capacity.
Declaring the competition open at the North East Development Commission (NEDC) Hall, Government Girls Unity College, Damaturu, Governor Buni, stated that the spelling bee competition is designed to encourage students to develop strong language skills, broaden their vocabulary, and cultivate a culture of learning, discipline, and healthy academic competition.
"This year's edition features participation from 73 schools across all 17 local government areas of Yobe State, who will engage in three days of academic competition, intellectual discovery, and celebration of excellence.
"Our administration's determination to ensure that talent is discovered and supported regardless of location, background, or educational circumstance," said Gov. Buni.
The governor was represented by his deputy,Alhaji Idi Barde Gubana,Gov.Buni further stated that the initiative highlights the state government's broader investment in education and human capital development, particularly its efforts to create opportunities for young people to excel academically and compete favourably at national and international levels.
The governor used the occasion to salute dedicated teachers and coaches who have labored tirelessly, often with limited resources, to prepare these students for the competition.
He also expressed appreciation for the effort and commitment of the organizers, particularly the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mohammed Goje, who organized the first edition of the competition in 2024, commending their foresight in coming up with this noble idea.
He urged the students not to let pressure overwhelm them. "Win or lose, you have already achieved greatness by reaching this stage," he added.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of the 2026 spelling bee competition, Dr. K. Zaid, explained that the participating institutions comprise 48 public schools and 25 private schools, reflecting the inclusive character of the initiative.
He commended Nigeria Food Corporation, Grayland Multiple Investments Ltd, Damuli Investment Limited, Elegance Construction Limited, Samsud Construction, and other partners for the support they have rendered to ensure the competition holds in the state.
At the end of the competition, winners are expected to win the following;1st Position (Overall)1 million, a bicycle, a laptop, a tablet, and books.1st Position Teacher; a motorcycle and 500,000.2nd Position Student: 500,000, a bicycle, a laptop, and books. and 2nd Position Teacher,a deep freezer and 250,000.
