Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has approved the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government/Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN/ASUU) Agreement, authorizing the payment of arrears for three major academic allowances.
The approval covers Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), Professorial Allowance, and Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), positioning Yobe State as one of the leading states implementing the agreement to enhance staff welfare and promote academic excellence.
Governor Buni's decision followed a report on the review of welfare and remuneration of academic staff submitted by the state Fact-Finding Committee to the Acting Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Mohammed Goje.
The committee conducted visits to selected state-owned universities across Nigeria, including Bauchi State University, Kaduna State University (KASU), and Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology in Wudil, Kano, to investigate, compare, and document prevailing practices in other state universities.
Payments will commence with effect from August 2026, reaffirming the administration's commitment to rewarding excellence, promoting industrial harmony, and sustaining quality higher education in Yobe State.
Receiving the committee report, the Acting SSG, Dr. Mohammed Goje, commended members for their dedication and sense of responsibility in working to improve industrial harmony between the government and ASUU.
Prof. Muhammad Bello Kawuwa, Commissioner for Higher Education and Chairman of the Committee, who was represented by Prof. Mohammed Musa Lawan, appealed for research grants, annual salary increments, improved welfare incentives, and sustained funding of tertiary institutions to enhance efficiency and academic excellence.
The Yobe State University Chairman of ASUU, Muhammad Adam, expressed the union's appreciation to Governor Buni for demonstrating commitment to the welfare of its members and support for quality education. He charged union members to reciprocate the gesture through dedication to duty to achieve excellence, industrial harmony, and research advancement.
