The United Nations Women (UN Women) Yobe State office has praised the state government for its intervention aimed at supporting bean cake (akara) sellers with energy-efficient cooking stoves, bags of beans, and cooking oil.
The initiative, implemented through the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Empowerment, is part of Governor Mai Mala Buni's administration's efforts to improve the livelihoods of women who make up the majority of small-scale food vendors in the state.
In a press statement made available to journalists in Damaturu, the UN Women Focal Person for Yobe State, Ambassador Fatima Mohd Paga, described the intervention as a significant step toward promoting renewable energy and reducing dependence on traditional cooking methods.
"This intervention is a significant step towards promoting renewable energy, reducing dependence on traditional cooking methods, and improving the livelihoods of women who make up the majority of small-scale food vendors," Paga stated.
She noted that by easing production costs and encouraging cleaner cooking solutions, the initiative contributes to poverty reduction, environmental sustainability, and women's economic empowerment.
UN Women officially recognized the programme as a practical example of climate-responsive and gender-inclusive governance.
"Investing in women-owned businesses not only strengthens household incomes but also advances sustainable development and community resilience," Paga added.
The Focal Person further appreciated the Yobe State Government for what she described as a "thoughtful intervention" and encouraged the continued implementation of policies and programmes that empower women, promote clean energy, and accelerate inclusive economic growth across the state.
The initiative is expected to benefit numerous women engaged in the akara business, providing them with cleaner cooking alternatives and reducing the cost of production while contributing to environmental conservation efforts in the state.
