Two hundred young innovators from Nigeria's six northeastern states gathered in Damaturu Saturday for the North East Youth Idea Summit, showcasing AI-driven solutions to deep-rooted governance challenges.
Organized by the Spotlight for Transparency and Accountability Initiative, the summit themed "Transforming Nigeria's Local Governance: Harnessing AI and Youth Innovation for Transparency" demonstrated how modest seed funding can yield transformative digital tools.
Speaking at the event,the spotlight Chief Exercutive Officer,Mr.Mu'azu Alhaji Modu announced that 25 youths selected as Civic Innovation Awardees received $100 grants (₦140,000) each to launch community projects. Four challenge winners secured ₦500,000 each for advanced platforms.
"We gave them seed money, and they built superb digital systems achieving what millions in funding cannot without sheer dedication," Modu said.
He stated that,innovations on display included budget-tracking apps for monitoring government spending, healthcare tools for underserved areas, and Civic Play an interactive game promoting civic education among young people.
Modu noted that two participants from last year's event were inspired to apply for the fellowship and returned this year with impressive success stories.
On his remarks,Mr. Richard Chidibere, Grants Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund (NYFF) explained,a LEAP Africa initiative backed by the MacArthur Foundation, Ford Foundation, and Luminate Group introduced Bayani, an AI tool collectively built by the 25 fellows across six cities.
"The concept came from young coworkers trained across six northeastern cities," Chidibere said."Today we are affirming that this is a positive contribution from the northeast.
"It portrays the region with a vibrancy rarely seen internationally, showing a strong appetite for civic participation and tech-driven design,"Said Chidibere.
The summit also brought together government officials and youth leaders to brainstorm solutions for the region's most pressing challenges, signaling a growing partnership between policymakers and the region's tech-savvy younger generation.
