The Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has voiced strong opposition to the growing demand for the establishment of State Police, arguing that the initiative would be costly, counterproductive, and vulnerable to abuse.
In a press release on Saturday, KACRAN National President Hon. Khalil Mohd Bello stated that while insecurity is a pressing national concern, the creation of state police forces is not the solution. The group instead called for massive job creation, community dialogue, and the strengthening of existing security structures.
KACRAN raised several concerns, including the potential victimization of pastoralists in states with anti-grazing laws, the risk of state governors misusing the force against political opponents, and the lack of financial capacity in most states to sustain a new police command.
The association also warned that a parallel police system could lead to command conflicts and divert critical funds away from health, education, and agriculture.
Citing the success of the Niger Delta amnesty programme, KACRAN urged the Federal Government to prioritize dialogue and economic empowerment as more sustainable and cost-effective paths to peace.
The group recommended increased recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force and military, job creation to curb youth restiveness, and the institutional empowerment of traditional rulers as first-line conflict resolvers.
