Yobe State Varsity Matriculates 2,240 Students,Charges Them on Entrepreneurship, Discipline

Yobe State University (YSU) has on Monday formally admitted 2,240 students into various degree programmes during its 18th matriculation ceremony, with a call on the new intakes to embrace entrepreneurship and shun vices.

The ceremony, held on the university campus,marked the beginning of an academic journey for the fresh students, who were drawn from the institution’s seven faculties and the College of Medical Sciences.

Delivering his address,the Vice Chancellor,Professor Mohammed Bashir Yahir, emphasised that the university is shifting focus beyond conventional government employment. 

He noted that the institution is strengthening entrepreneurship development and practical training to equip graduates with skills for self-reliance and competitiveness in the private sector.

“We are not training them only to be employed by government.Our goal is to produce graduates who can also create jobs or fit seamlessly into private enterprises,” Professor Yahir said.

He also applauded the Federal Government’s Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund), describing it as a vital intervention for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. 

The Vice Chancellor warned, however, that the university would not tolerate examination malpractice or drug abuse, vowing that offenders would face the full weight of the law.

In his remarks, the Registrar, Alhaji Isa Audu Dallari, congratulated the matriculating students and advised them to abide by the university’s rules and regulations.He described the occasion as a pivotal step in their academic lives.

Earlier, the Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Sani Isah, urged the freshers to strike a healthy balance between academic work and co-curricular activities. 

He cautioned against excessive use of social media and entertainment at the expense of their studies.

A breakdown of the newly admitted students shows that the Faculty of Sciences has the highest number with 935, followed by the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences with 525.

The College of Medical Sciences admitted 465 students, while Education, Arts, Law, and Agriculture recorded 121, 74, 67, and 53 students respectively.
