Zulum Commissions Shani Lock-Up Market, Unveils 48-Classroom Higher Islamic College

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has continued his administration’s grassroots development agenda with the commissioning of a lock-up shopping complex in Shani Local Government Area and the unveiling of a major Higher Islamic College project for the community.

The governor arrived in Shani on a working visit and, on Tuesday evening, paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Shani, reaffirming his administration’s respect for traditional institutions and their critical role in community development, peace, and security.

Governor Zulum formally inaugurated the Shani Lock-Up Shopping Complex, a project executed by the Shani Local Government Council under the leadership of its Executive Chairman, Hon. Hassan Abdu Labaki. The facility consists of ten lock-up shops aimed at boosting commercial activities, supporting small-scale entrepreneurs, and enhancing the council’s internally generated revenue. The project is also expected to create sustainable business opportunities for youths and women, thereby strengthening the local economy.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Zulum described the project as a timely intervention that will stimulate market activities and contribute to economic recovery in communities across southern Borno.

In a related development, the governor also unveiled the proposed construction of a Higher Islamic College in Shani. The project, according to architectural designs presented, will comprise 48 modern classrooms arranged in a multi-block campus with comprehensive academic facilities, including detailed site layouts and fully equipped learning spaces capable of accommodating hundreds of students.

The Higher Islamic College is designed to integrate Islamic and Western education, expand access to quality tertiary learning, and promote youth development in the area.

The commissioning of the lock-up market and the unveiling of the Higher Islamic College underscore the Borno State Government’s commitment to economic empowerment and educational advancement as key components of its post-insurgency stabilization and sustainable development strategy.

The Governor was accompanied by Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume; APC State party Chairman Hon. Bello Ayuba; Bukar Talba; the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Abdullahi Musa Askira; members of the State Assembly, commissioners, local government chairmen, and other stakeholders from the area.
