Yobe Takes the Crown: Named National Primary Healthcare Champion with $500K Win

The Yobe State Government has emerged as the National Champion in the 2025 Primary Healthcare Leadership Challenge, also winning the title of Best Performing State in the North-East.

The state received a prize of $500,000 in recognition of its outstanding performance.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Mohammad Lawan Gana, announced the awards while briefing journalists in Damaturu,credited the success to the health sector reforms under Governor Mai Mala Buni.

He highlighted strategic investments and a sustained commitment to improving healthcare access and quality across the state.

According to him, key achievements noted by the evaluation panel include the revitalization of 142 Primary Health Care centres and the recruitment of over 2,500 health workers in the past six years.

He further explained that other achievements are the establishment of the Yobe State Contributory Health Care Scheme and a drug revolving program, as well as the development of emergency medical services and ambulance systems.

"A distinguished panel of public health experts commended Yobe for strong performance in maternal and child health, malaria control, and routine immunization. The state also scored exceptionally high in client satisfaction surveys.

"This recognition follows Governor Buni’s recent Award of Excellence in Equitable Healthcare and Social Welfare from the Dove Healthcare Award in December," Dr. Gana noted.

He praised healthcare workers, development partners, and government bodies for their collective efforts and called for continued commitment to building a healthier, more resilient Yobe State.
