Yobe Sports Writers Hail Governor Buni’s Stadium Transformation, Generous Donation
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Yobe State Chapter, has issued a strong commendation to Governor Mai Mala Buni for his transformative investments in sports infrastructure and his support for sports journalism.
In a statement released Friday by the Chapter Chairman, Barr. Joel Duku, the association highlighted the Governor’s “unwavering commitment to sports development in Yobe State and Nigeria at large.”
The centrepiece of the commendation is the nearing-completion total overhaul of the August 27 Stadium in Damaturu. SWAN described the project as a “game-changer,” transforming the facility into a state-of-the-art complex capable of hosting continental events.
“The construction of a VIP stand, roofing of the popular side, presidential VIP lounge, indoor sporting complex, and iconic fence and gate has become a cynosure of attraction,” Duku stated. He noted these upgrades add to the aesthetic urban beautification of the capital while creating a proud hub for sports activities.
Beyond infrastructure, the association acknowledged Governor Buni’s significant financial contribution of 20 million Naira to SWAN’s National 60th Anniversary celebration and fundraising. Yobe State was recorded as the highest donor for the event, a move SWAN called “a significant contribution to the development of sports journalism in Nigeria.”
The statement underscored the broader social importance of these investments. “We recognize the importance of sports in shaping the youth and diverting their energies from social vices like drug abuse, cultism and other criminalities,” Duku said.
He urged the Governor to continue prioritizing sports as a vital tool for employment, character-building, and national integration.
Reaffirming their role as one of the pillars of sports, Yobe SWAN pledged its “continued support and commitment to promoting sports” in the state and nationally.
