ENGR. ABUBAKAR D. ALIYU SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN FOR VOTER REGISTRATION IN YOBE

 

The Engr. Abubakar D. Aliyu Solidarity Movement for Good Governance, a political advocacy group, has announced the launch of an intensive campaign to mobilise all eligible citizens in Yobe State to register for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise ahead of 2027 elections.

Speaking to journalists in Damaturu on Tuesday, the Patron of the Movement, Mohammed Yusuf Ajiji, said voter registration is the only way for citizens to elect leaders of their choice who can build on Governor Mai Mala Buni’s achievements in 2027.

Ajiji explained that the Movement will be rolling out community-level sensitisation, town-hall meetings, and door-to-door outreach to encourage residents aged 18 and above to take advantage of the CVR exercise.

“Democracy thrives only when citizens participate fully,” he stressed. “Our message is simple: If you want consolidation on Governor Mai Mala Buni’s successes, if you want good governance, then you must register, collect your Permanent Voter Card and vote. That is how we build the Yobe State of our dreams.”

The Movement called on traditional rulers, youth and women groups, civil society organisations, and the media to partner with it in spreading the message of active participation in the electoral process.

“We owe it to ourselves and to future generations to strengthen our democracy,” Ajiji added. “The first step is to get every eligible voter on the register and at the polling stations.”

Ajiji said part of the campaign is to reverse the disturbing trend of voter apathy witnessed in previous elections across the country. 

“We are deeply concerned about the low turnout and voter apathy that characterised past elections in across the country. The statistics are very alarming.  In 2003, about 60,823,022 Nigerians registered and about 42,000 voted in the election - almost 68%. However, in 2023, over 93,000,000 registered with a voter turn out of about 24,900,000 persons. We are talking about 26%. We have to change this pattern and be active players in deciding who governs us at all levels of government,” he said. 

Ajiji said. “This time, we are determined to ensure that every citizen of voting age is not only registered but ready to vote in Yobe State. Registration is not an option; it is a civic duty and the foundation of good governance.”

He said with this initiative, the Engr. Abubakar D. Aliyu Solidarity Movement for Good Governance hopes to significantly increase voter registration and participation, laying a stronger foundation for accountable leadership in Yobe State.
