Nigeria Backs UN Global Advocate for Peace, Maryam Hassan

The federal government has pledged full support for Maryam Bukar Hassan,a Nigerian spoken word artist and peace advocate, recently appointed as the first-ever United Nations Global Advocate for Peace under the UN’s Peace and Security Pillar.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking on Monday in Abuja when Maryam and her team paid him a courtesy visit at the Presidential Villa, described her appointment as “well-deserved” and commended her consistency in promoting peace. He cited her viral video, “Violence Has No Religion”, as a powerful example of her advocacy, saying he had watched it over a hundred times.

“She embodies the Nigeria of our dreams,” Shettima said. “On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I assure you of our unflinching support. This administration is pro-youth, and we will do whatever it takes to support your cause. You are not alone; we are in this together.”

The Vice President praised Maryam’s commitment to aligning her work with the aspirations of her home state, Borno, and stressed that Nigeria’s vast human and material resources could be harnessed to build unity and prosperity.

Earlier, Maryam outlined her mission to promote peace globally, starting with Nigeria, and called for federal government collaboration to create an enabling environment for her advocacy projects. She said her work would not only support UN peacekeeping efforts but also address security challenges at home.

Her delegation revealed that over the next two years, she will focus on building a coalition of young voices and collaborating with creative talents worldwide to spread the message of peace.

The visit marks the beginning of a potential partnership between the federal government and Maryam’s advocacy team to foster unity and stability both locally and internationally
