NEDC Commissions Mega School to Decongest Largest Primary School in Yobe




The North East Development Commission (NEDC) officially commissioned and handed over the newly constructed Ari Kime Mega School to the Yobe State Government on Tuesday. 

The project,located in Potiskum Local Government Area, aims to decongest the original Ari Kime Primary School, recognized as the largest primary school in both Nigeria and West Africa with over 18,000 pupils attending in three daily shifts.

The handover ceremony was led by the Honourable Minister for Regional Development, Abu Maigari Ahmadu, accompanied by Secretary to Yobe state Government,the NEDC management team and members of the National Assembly Committee on NEDC. 

Governor Mai Mala Buni received the facility on behalf of the state, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Baba Mallam Wali.

The projects include the following,two Storey Buildings for Primary School Section, 4-blocks of 24-class rooms,8 stores,32 toilets,

Other includes;Two Storey Buildings for Junior Secondary School Section,Administrative Block of 7 Offices, 1 Store and 6 Toilets,One Block of 2-Units of 2-Bedroom staff Quarters,Commercial Centre of 4 shops and 2 toilets,Gate House and Fencing,School Clinic comprising of Emergency Room, Resting Room, 2 Wards, Pharmacy and 2 Toilets.

Also includes;Generator Set,power transformer, Electric borehole,Overhead and Ground water tanks in a power house and Solar streetlights respectively.

Dr.Abubakar Garba Iliya, Executive Director of Finance and Administration at the NEDC office recounted the Commission's visit 2-3 years prior, which documented the severe overcrowding forcing pupils into morning,afternoon, and evening shifts at the original Ari Kime school.

"Immediately following this assessment," Dr. Iliya stated, "the Commission's board members directed us to develop this mega-school facility to decongest the existing institution." 

He formally presented the handover documents to the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), whose representatives were present, stating, "It is now my privilege to formally present this document, handing over the facility to SUBEB."

The NEDC team also commissioned Mega Schools in Buni-Yadi of Gujba LGA and in Gashua of Bade LGA  respectively.

The commissioning marks a significant step towards improving educational infrastructure and learning conditions in Yobe State, with immediate enrollment expected at the new mega school to alleviate pressure on the original site.
