IGP Orders Probe After Retired Officer Rejects ₦2 Million Pension

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed an immediate investigation into allegations made by a retired police officer over inadequate pension benefits.  

The officer, a retired Superintendent of Police who served for 35 years before retiring in October 2023, appeared in a viral video expressing frustration after receiving only ₦2 million as his final entitlement, with an additional ₦1 million in arrears—totaling ₦3 million from the Nigeria Police Pension Board.  

In response, Force Spokesman ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi confirmed that the IGP has ordered NPF Pensions Limited to urgently review the case, identify any discrepancies, and take corrective action.  

“The IGP has mandated a thorough probe into the retired officer’s claims regarding pension welfare. NPF Pensions has been directed to scrutinize the matter and ensure prompt resolution,” Adejobi stated.  

Egbetokun reaffirmed the police leadership’s dedication to the welfare of serving and retired officers, acknowledging ongoing reforms while emphasizing the need for accountability.  

“The NPF values the sacrifices of its personnel, both active and retired. While progress has been made in pension administration, we remain open to feedback for further improvements,” he said.  

The IGP urged calm among stakeholders, assuring that the findings of the investigation would lead to lasting solutions.  

This development comes amid growing discontent among retired officers over pension delays and insufficient payouts, with some threatening nationwide protests.
