Group trains conflict-affected communities in Yobe on explosive ordnance safety

The North East Development Commission (NEDC), in collaboration with Makesafe Humanitarian Safe Service Limited,has conducted a comprehensive training program aimed at enhancing awareness and safety regarding explosive ordnance risk among residents and security personnel in Yobe.

The training,which took place on Tuesday in Damaturu, the Yobe state capital, attended by Participants including members of the Nigerian Army, Civil Defense Corps, local vigilante groups, and community residents from across 7 local government areas (LGAs) of the state.

The CEO Makesave Humanitarian Safety Service LTD, Group Captain Sadeeq Garba Shehu(RTD) explained,the training  aimed to educate Yobe residents about the dangers of explosive ordnance left behind after conflicts. 

He stated that,the session highlighted the risks posed by unexploded bombs and munitions, which can remain dangerous for decades, particularly in accessible areas like farms and residential neighborhoods.

"The training emphasized that while participants should not attempt to dispose of explosives themselves, they should learn to recognize hazards, mark dangerous areas, and alert trained personnel to manage these threats safely. 

"The goal is to empower local representatives to educate their communities on recognizing and mitigating the risks associated with unexploded ordnance",the Cap Garba RTD.

In his remarks,the special adviser to Yobe state Governor on security matters, General Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd)said,the training is important become it affects all facets of lives.

He revealed that,"15 to 16 years,we have been having issues of Boko Haram insurgency, which has occasioned the use firearms and all calibre and manner of lethal weapons and we are all aware , sometimes the ammunition or explosions used do not explode as required.Therefore,they remain in various locations as unexpected ordinance".

A vigilante leader from Gujba LGA, Abubakar Garba and a Community leader,Adamu Salisu expressed gratitude for the initiative, acknowledging the heightened risks posed by abandoned explosives and landmines in the aftermath of insurgency-related violence.

“This training is pivotal for us,” remarked a local vigilante leader. “It not only equips us with life-saving information but also strengthens our collective efforts towards community safety and support.”.
