Be Enhanced, Resilient to face Climate-Related Challenges, says SAVWIN MD

The Executive Director of ‘Sound Abilities for Vulnerable Women Initiative Nigeria (SAVWIN), Miyausa Mshelia with support from Disability Right Fund (DRC) has asked women with disabilities to be resilient, and adaptive to face climate-related challenges.

The Executive Director, disclosed this at Maiduguri the Borno state capital at a capacity building for 30 women on Advocacy for Climatic Justice and Inclusion of Women and Girls with disabilities.

Mshelia said, “this capacity building is to carry all of you along and to ensure you have one voice by coming together under one umbrella to achieve a purpose”.

“It is time to enhance the resilience and adaptive capacity of women with disabilities in the face of climate-related challenges, while promoting their empowerment, inclusion and active participation in climate decision-making processes” she said.

She further explained it is through the capacity building that they would be united so as to tackle the stigmatization faced and to champion their rights to be heard by either government or groups.

One of the participants who spoke at the training, Falmata Muktari, a Woman  Leader of the Blind Women Association in Borno State said “the workshop has opened her eyes on the need for different clusters to work as a team without division so that they can achieve their goal”

Other participants, Habiba Idris and Zara Suleiman acknowledged it is the for the first time they are hearing of climate change, but the workshop has opened her eyes, and with the knowledge gained, they pledged to go back to their communities to step down the training.

The training which lasts for two days is also aimed at sensitizing them to be self-reliant as well reduce the street begging which has become so popular norms in the northern Nigeria.
