Construction Advances on New Market in Yobe's Historic Machina Town

The historic border town of Machina in Yobe State is poised for a major economic boost with the near completion of a new modern market.

The project, initiated by Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration, aims to transform local trade and leverage the region’s agricultural potential.

During a site tour on Monday, local residents welcomed the initiative.Community members Lawan Audu Machina and Salisu Mohammad praised the Governor for the project. 

They expressed confidence that, when completed, it will strengthen commercial ties within Nigeria and with neighboring countries.

The Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Alhaji Abdullahi Bego, who led the media team, revealed that construction began in August 2025 and has seen rapid progress.

He emphasized that the market is designed to create a conducive environment for business, stimulating growth in the agriculturally strategic border zone.

"This project is part of a wider development approach that is drawing attention beyond Yobe,” Bego stated. 

He credited Governor Buni’s leadership for setting a development model for the North, adding that improved security has paved the way for investments that allow communities to thrive through commerce and agriculture.

The Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmad Buba, whose ministry is executing the project, highlighted the market’s role in adding value to local produce.

"Yobe, and Machina in particular, is known for high quality sesame seeds.

"Governor Buni’s vision is to establish processing hubs here for grading and packaging before distribution or export ensuring our farmers gain more from their harvest,"said the Housing Commissioner.
